There was a high school party, the main character’s two friends were drunk, the main character had found her boyfriend in bed with another girl, the main character alluding to her bisexuality, physical abuse from the main character’s ex-boyfriend, a drunken fight, and profanity. All in 5 minutes of reading! However, we also came across a lovely collection of poems and an interesting medical sci-fi novel.

First, what qualifies me to say anything about Wattpad?

I’ve been hanging out on Wattpad for about six months now, posting a Marvel fanfiction novel. My motivation for doing that was twofold. First, I’d heard about how people steal popular fanfiction stories from elsewhere and repost them on Wattpad.

My fanfiction was doing well on Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction.net, so I wanted to pre-empt any potential plagiarists. Second, I have a trunked YA novel I thought might do well with Wattpad’s teen audience. I didn’t want to start publishing it before I had a good idea of how the website worked, so the fanfiction novel became my test case.

So, is Wattpad any good?

In short, it depends. If you are a teenager and writing your first works, you’ll probably find a friendly community of similarly minded writers. If you are an adult with twenty years of writing experience and aspiring to professional publication, Wattpad is likely to be frustrating and disappointing.

Getting Readers

Getting Feedback

There is a rumour out there that Wattpad is a good place to get feedback on your writing. That very much depends on the level of your writing. Do you struggle with keeping your tenses consistent and don’t know how to punctuate dialogue? Wattpad is the place where someone will eventually tell you how to fix those issues.

Wattpad is the only place where I was told that using single quotes instead of double quotes was a grammatical error (PSA: it’s an acceptable stylistic choice in several varieties of English) and that I needed to work on my ‘gramme’ (sic). You usually have to return a critique too, at which point you need to decide how mean you’re going to be to a fourteen-year-old who is writing their very first story.

Getting Paid

There’s also Wattpad Studios, which is meant to connect authors with traditional publishers and movie networks. There is not a lot of info on the way this works or the payment terms. I get the impression that they cherry-pick the most popular authors on the platform and essentially try to act as their agents.

As for using Wattpad’s popularity to pick up an outside agent and/or publishing contract, it’s risky. Wattpad itself says that it doesn’t matter if you’ve posted your story on Wattpad before querying as long as you are open about it. Some agents do think that way. There are also some out there who will see it you giving away your first publication rights.

Plus, there is also a chance that despite your best efforts, your story might just never get any traction. Why should a publisher pay for a story that has already been published online and didn’t get any reads when it was free?
