XUMO Free Movies & TV Shows Mod Apk is not the only free video streaming service we’ve reviewed, nor the only free live TV streaming service available. Pluto TV is the closest competitor to Xumo.

It has a similar mix of interest-based channels and feeds of news networks. Locast is another technically free option, though that service makes it difficult to get around its $5-per-month donation suggestion. However, Locast is notable in that it provides streaming access to all your local channels, without the need for a tuner or cable box.

As mentioned, most live TV streaming services require you to pay a monthly fee. With that subscription, you get actual cable channels and, in many cases, a much better library of on-demand content from those channels.

Xumo is available on the web, mobile devices (Android and iOS), media streaming platforms (Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku), and as an included app on many TVs from manufacturers such as Hisense, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio.

Notably missing from the list are Apple TVs, Chromecasts, and gaming consoles, such as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Other free video streaming services are available on more devices. Xumo officially supports streaming in the US, Canada, France, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Mexico, with some additional availability via built-in LG TV apps.

Getting Started and Web Interface

Unlike other free video streaming services, Xumo does not give you the option to sign up for an account. Pluto TV, Tubi, and Crackle let you do so, but don’t require it. Among the advantages of setting up an account with these services is the ability to create watchlists for on-demand content as well as customizing what channels you see in the interface.

Xumo’s site uses a mostly dark color scheme, with blue and white accents. The color scheme looks elegant, but the interface is otherwise busy with content. The page auto-plays content too, which is annoying. You navigate the experience via two top menu items: Discover and On Demand.

There are no profile settings, nor is there a search function. You can access the Support and FAQ sections via links at the bottom of the page.

On the Discover page, Xumo lists all of its channels, along with a basic guide to what is currently streaming and what is set to air next. I would have liked the option to preview more upcoming content and see more information about the length of each programming block.

Xumo lets you filter the channels list by genre, such as Comedy; Entertainment; Food, Drink, & Travel; Music; News; Sports; and TV & Movies. You can sort those available channels by popularity or in alphabetical order. When you see something you want to watch, just click on the channel row. At the top of the page, you also get a brief description of the currently playing programming.

At the bottom of the page, Xumo lists all of the channel genres again. Clicking on of those categories brings you to the On Demand section. Here, you can browse all the available channels in a much more visually friendly interface.

Clicking on a channel brings you to its landing page with the live video player at top and organized lists of other series and topics covered by that channel. For example, on the Bloomberg channel page, there are horizontally scrolling categories for Latest, Top US News, Bloomberg Technology, and QuickTake. This page also supports a pop-out video that follows you down the page; something the Discover interface does not.

Xumo’s Mobile Apps

I downloaded XUMO Free Movies & TV Shows Mod Apk on a Google Pixel 3 running Android 10.  The app retains the same dark, sleek look as the web interface, but introduces some helpful navigational elements. The app also, unfortunately, has an auto-playing video on the home screen.

At the bottom of the screen, there are five icons for getting around the app: On Now, On Demand, Movies, Search, and Settings. The settings section is bare-bones. In fact, there are no actual settings for the app here; just links to terms and policy, the privacy policy, licenses, and a button for supporting the app.

At the minimum, there should be an option to restrict streaming to only a Wi-Fi connection, set the default streaming quality, and an option to toggle closed captioning across the board.

Playback Experience

Xumo’s desktop web player looks clean and has all the standard playback features, though the experience differs for live streams and on-demand content. For on-demand content, you get a 10-second rewind button and an option to set the playback resolution.

If there are closed captions available, you can also customize them directly from the playback screen. For streaming live content, you lose out on the ability to select a playback resolution, which is disappointing. One interesting note about the video player is that if you right-click on it, you can see several different keyboard shortcuts it supports.

For instance, you can press the space bar to pause playback; c to toggle captions; m to mute or unmute; or any of the number keys to seek through on-demand content. The mobile playback experience lacks the option to customize closed captions and doesn’t have a rewind button, either.

As mentioned, Xumo is an ad-supported service. For on-demand content, that means that you’ll watch an ad about every seven minutes. Ad breaks are marked on the progress bar. For live streaming content, it’s unclear when ads play.

I didn’t actually come across any ads when watching the livestreams of Xumo’s channels. With a few ad-blocking and privacy extensions installed on Firefox, I was able to avoid ads for on-demand content, too. Xumo might change how it detects such extensions, so don’t expect to be able to watch this content ad-free forever.

Xumo recommends speeds of 10Mbps for streaming its content. I tested streaming performance over my home Ethernet connection (200 Mbps download); I watched Spotlight during my test period without issue. I also tested the performance on mobile with similar results.

Features and Accessibility

As mentioned, Xumo does not allow you to set up an account, which severely limits its ability to provide extra features. For example, you miss out on parental control options, though Pluto TV doesn’t have parental control options either. Sling TV is one of the few live TV streaming services to include parental control tools.

In my testing, a surprising amount of Xumo’s content was missing closed captions, which is disappointing. However, the major news networks and on-demand movies largely did have them available. Pluto TV, in my experience, was better about having closed captions available for all streaming content.

One advantage of Pluto TV is that it lets you customize which channels appear in your guide, if you sign up for an account. Xumo does not provide that option, though, as mentioned, you can indicate your favorite channels on the mobile apps, which pushes them to the top of the channel list.

Since Xumo doesn’t allow you to create an account, there are no limits on how many devices you can stream from simultaneously. As with all free live TV options we’ve tested, Xumo doesn’t include any DVR features.

Conclusion

If you want some TV to play in the background, but don’t want to pay for it, then XUMO Free Movies & TV Shows Mod Apk 4.1.23 is worth a shot. But be prepared for lots of ads, a patchy collection of content (even among free services), and a clunky interface.
