Discovering Content

TuneIn Radio app free offers several ways to find content. While testing I was in the mood for NBA talk, so I tapped the Browser icon, which launched a list of radio categories like News, Talk, and Sports.

You can search for content by performing a keyword search or browsing a list of categories that include Top Podcasts and Trending. You can also take a trip into the By Location section to explore stations from regions around the globe. It’s a cool way to see what the international crowd is listening to.

The home screen’s content feed lets you see which programming block is broadcasting on a particular station. For example, when I saw WFAN in the stream, I noticed that Joe & Evan’s show had begun streaming an hour earlier.

It didn’t state that the show began at 10 a.m., but that it started one hour ago. Call it a small nitpick, but TuneIn Pro vs Premium used to list upcoming start times, and that’s now a feature reserved exclusively for the Web-based version. I miss it.

You can also share content via email, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, or TuneIn Radio Pro’s Twitter-like social tool, Echo. People like me who consider listening to the radio a passive affair probably won’t touch Echo or other social tools, but maybe others will.

I discovered stations and genres that I didn’t know existed, such as SomaFM: Secret Agent (which streams mysterious tunes that would sound appropriate in a James Bond flick). Of course, there are also tons of stations with American music (Top 40, Hip Hop, etc.) and talk (Mike & Mike In The Morning).

Sports talk radio is well-represented by stations dedicated to specific sports (such as college football or boxing), as well as general sports talk stations. You can also listen to podcasts that live stream, such as TWiT.

Some content, however, such as MLB and Barclays Premier League, is only available for those who sign up for TuneIn Radio Premium. The $7.99 per month subscription service not only grants access to those big-time sports leagues but to a commercial-free listening experience, too.

Note that the subscription only removes TuneIn Radio’s pre-roll ads; you still hear ads that are part of a station’s broadcast. A Premium subscription also lets you listen to more than 40,000 audiobooks.

Audio Quality and Recording

I tested the quality by listening to WFAN. After a tiny buffering period, the channel began smoothly streaming sports talk. The show’s audio quality was what you’d expect from over-the-air radio—the hosts, with their professional equipment, sounded quite good, while the callers sounded less than stellar.

Tapping the red Record button lets you record audio to the iPad’s internal storage. I recorded several minutes of the Elium Lounge and Trip Hop station, which played back flawlessly when I jumped over to the Recordings area and tapped the file. TuneIn Radio Pro keeps the last half hour of live radio in memory, so you can rewind a bit if you’d like.
