At just 9.3 pounds, the MovieMate Mod Apk  weighs less than some laptops, and it’s far smaller than a classic boom box, at 5 by 13.4 by 9.3 inches (HWD). It includes a handle that swings out to one side so you can carry it easily—whether from room to room or to a friend’s house for a night of movies or game playing—and it comes with a soft case to protect it when you’re carrying it or storing it away.

The case is nicely designed, with ample pockets for cables (which you’ll have to buy separately if you need them since Epson doesn’t supply any). The case also includes cutouts for the handle, so you can take advantage of the handle without taking the projector out of the case.

Basics and Setup

The native 540p resolution for the LCD projector in the MovieMate PRO is exactly half that of 1080p HD, which presumably makes it easier for it to handle 1080i or 1080p input without introducing scaling artifacts. The progressive scan DVD (not Blu-ray) player upconverts the 480 resolution on DVDs to 540p to take the best advantage of the projector.

Setting up the Epson MovieMate 30s to watch a DVD requires little more than plugging the projector in, turning it on, and pointing it at a screen or blank area on a wall. A manual focus ring offers sure to control for easy focus. You can also use the digital zoom to adjust image size and the digital keystone control to keep the sides of the image parallel if you’re pointing the projector up or down. Beyond that, you can simply load the DVD and let it run.

One nice touch that helps make setup easy is that the projector has a relatively short throw—meaning you can throw, or project, a fairly large image from a close distance. This not only lets you project a large image in a small room, but it also minimizes the chances of getting shadows on the screen every time someone gets up and moves around for any reason.

Epson says the Epson MovieMate 55 will throw a minimum 30-inch diagonal 16:9 image from 2.9 feet or a maximum 300-inch diagonal image from 29.9 feet. For the majority of my tests, I used our standard 2-meter-wide image (roughly 79 inches across, or 90 inches diagonally for a 16:9 image) from about 8.8 feet.

The projector also offers an assortment of connectors so it can work with external video equipment, game consoles, and PCs, and even read files directly from a USB memory key. According to Epson, the projector can read JPEG image files, MP3 and WMA audio files, and DIVX video files.

The input connectors include an HDMI port for digital connections to video equipment or computers, a set of three RCA phono plugs for component video, another set of three for composite video and stereo audio, a VGA connector for a computer, and the connector for a USB key. Finally, there’s a microphone input you can use if you need to narrate, say, a photo slide show or computer presentation, or (and let me be clear that this is Epson’s suggestion, as I’d rather not encourage it) if you want to use the projector for karaoke.

Where the Photons Hit the Screen

I measured the MovieMate Mod Apk in its brightest mode at 2,237 lumens. That’s about 12 per cent brighter than its 2,000-lumen rating, which is highly unusual, given that most projectors don’t even match their ratings, much less surpass them. (For example, when I reviewed the Epson EX70 ($799 direct,), which Epson also rates at 2,000 lumens, I measured the brightness at 1,731 lumens.) In any case, the MovieMate 60 is more than bright enough to throw a reasonably large image that can stand up to the ambient lighting in a typical family room or living room.

Because too bright an image for a given lighting condition can lead to eyestrain, it’s also worth mentioning that the projector offers other modes for different lighting conditions, including an Auto mode that adjusts for the current ambient light. I measured a range of brightness levels for these other modes, with a low of 820 lumens, which is appropriate for theater dark lighting—meaning essentially no ambient light.

Image quality generally counts as a plus, but with some important hedges. The projector did a reasonably good job on our suite of video clips, handling skin tones well and maintaining details in dark areas. And I didn’t see any noteworthy flaws, like motion artifacts. However, it lost some details in bright areas and is noticeably lacking in contrast, even in theater dark lighting.

HQV Benchmark test

On the HQV Benchmark test, which measures how well a given piece of video equipment can handle 480i standard-definition (SD) TV input, the MovieMate Mod Apk scored a meagre 15 points out of a possible 130. Most projectors score between 40 and 70, which puts MovieMate 60 far below the norm. Even a data projector I reviewed, the NEC NP62 ($1,300 street,), scored notably better with a total of 48. Fortunately, if you plan to use the projector primarily for playing DVDs, the HQV test isn’t relevant. It’s worth mentioning too that the projector did reasonably well as a data projector on our suite of DisplayMate tests.

The 5.1 Dolby Digital DTS audio system and two 10-watt speakers are at least a match for a typical TV, with enough volume for a family room or living room. Unfortunately, the only audio control is for volume. However, the back of the projector offers a coax audio output that you can plug into another sound system.

Note too that the projector comes with a 2-year warranty for the projector itself and a 90-warranty for the lamp, with the warranty including next business day exchange and Epson picking up the cost of shipping both ways. Also worth noting is the 4,000-hour lifetime for the lamp in standard mode and 5,000 hours in Eco mode, more than twice as long as the 2,000 hours that’s more or less standard for projectors. Considering the replacement cost for the lamp ($159.99 direct), the long life represents a real benefit to your wallet over the lifetime of the projector.

Image Quality and Sound System

If you’re a serious movie buff, the Epson MovieMate 85HD s image quality and sound system probably won’t meet your standards. But for casual use—whether for watching movies or TV, playing games, or even for use with a computer as a data projector—the image and sound quality is more than acceptable. As I’ve already discussed, as an instant home theatre in its resolution class, it’s essentially unique, so there isn’t anything else to compare it with directly, much less an Editor’s Choice for the category. It’s the only choice in its category.

Considering that the MovieMate 60 includes a DVD player and sound system along with the projector, it’s a remarkable bargain. And it will certainly let you project a far larger image than you’ll get from any TV. If you want a home theatre that you can set up quickly when you need it and put away when you’re done, the MovieMate 60 may be just what you’re looking for.
